At the radio set

The night is dark, a soft breeze blows.
Through the branches, silence reigns all around.
Only machineguns drum the beat in the distance.
 
The comrades are asleep in a nearby tent,
dreaming of going home to their sweethearts.
Only I sit alone and watch over the radio,
listening for signals from the forward post.
 
And so I sit the whole night away,
and the next morning I feel a deep joy
when the scouts report over the radio
that their patrol returned unscathed.
