Room inside my head
You wander your way through my thoughts1Entering doorways, you break into a run
Old pictures fall from the walls
As you dance your way around up here
I close my eyes, I hear your voice
Oh, do come in - you don't have to knock
If you like we could renovate,
paint, or do the wallpaper
You're always welcome here
Doesn't matter the day or time of evening2
You're always welcome here with me3
You've got a room inside my head
Your own four walls
Your room inside my head
was built without need for tools4
If you want to, then swing on by
And I'll show you your domain
Anytime
Inside my head there's only you
You crack the locks and break down the barriers5
The gray ceiling you've painted blue
You leave the blinds wide open
As the light now pierces through the darkness6
You ought to feel yourself right at home
There's nothing you'll have want for here
We could clean and refurnish,
organize and decorate
You're always welcome here
Doesn't matter the day or time of evening
You're always welcome here with me
You've got a room inside my head
Your own four walls
Your room inside my head
was built without need for tools
If you want to, then swing on by
And I'll show you your domain
Anytime
Inside my head there's only you
Come on by
There's room here for two
(x4)
You've got a room inside my head
Your own four walls
In this room inside my head there's only you (you)
Up here, there's only you
- 1. 'Gedankengang' = 'Train of thought'. You could probably try using some more flowery imagery here about 'hitching a ride on the train cars within my mind' or 'strolling down my neural pathways', but I've instead kept it simple.
- 2. 'Ganz egal welcher Tag und egal wie spät' = 'It doesn't matter at all what day (of the week) and it doesn't matter how late (in the day? behind schedule?)'
- 3. The German lyrics have this part wrong. He doesn't repeat the previous phrase, he says 'Du bist immer willkommen bei mir', just like he says in the later part of the song.
- 4. 'gebaut ganz ohne Hände' ('built entirely without hands') - The idea is that this is saying the 'house' was built with the mind, so either 'without hands', 'without tools', it's the same sort of idea.
- 5. In German you have both 'die Wand' and 'die Mauer', but in English these are both just 'walls'. I've translated 'Mauern' as 'barriers' here because it better gets across the idea that these particular 'walls' are the ones standing in the way of her better getting to know him.
- 6. 'Die Fensterläden schließt du nicht, in all die dunklen Ecken kommt jetzt Licht' = 'You don't close the shutters, into all the dark corners (of the room) there now comes light'
