Pompe, the king’s true servant,rested nights on the Lord’s bed.
And from years of travel, sleepy,
he had suffered at the king’s feet.
Many a fustian maid
longed, as Pompe, to be alive,
and a thousand heroes did strive
and, as Pompe, dying lay.
