Poor Comfort

At midnight, I cried and sobbed
for you weren't there with me.
Then came the night ghosts
and I felt ashamed.
'Night ghosts,' I said,
'In my moment of distress,
you find me, who
in sleep you otherwise disregard.
Great assets I'm missing.
Do not think worse of me,
the one you had called wise,
Great evil affects him!'
And the night ghosts
with their disappointed faces
passed me by,
whether I was wise or foolish,
completely unconcerned.

Marmot

I come to those countries
with the marmot
and always found something to eat
with the marmot

refrain:
with as if, with as that,
with as the marmot
with as if, with as thatm
with as the marmot

ich even saw some men
with as the marmot
it likes the virgin even too much
with as the marmot

(refrain)

also so the beautiful virgin
with as the marmot
who would look after me, little one
with as the marmot

(refrain)

now, dont let me alone, you guys
with as the marmot
the adolescents like to eat and drink
with as the marmot

(refrain)

With a Painted Ribbon

Little flowers, little leaves
scatter me with a light hand.
Good young Gods of spring
toying on a rosy band.

Zephyr, take it on your wings.
Twine it 'round my beloved's dress.
Then she'll stand before the mirror,
there in all her cheerfulness.

With roses all surrounding her,
she seems like a rose in youth.
Just one glance grant me my dear!
For I have enough reward.

Feel what this heart will find.
Freely lend me your light hand.
May the bond that us will bind
be not a feeble rosy band!

Only Those Who Know Wistful Longing

Only those who know wistful longing1
know from what I suffer!
Alone and detached
of all joy,
I look to the heavens,
towards that direction.

Oh! Whoever loves and knows me
is in the vastness.
It deceives me, it burns
my intestines.
Only those who know wistful longing
know from what I suffer!

  • 1. The word 'Sehnsucht' has no direct translation in English. It is often translated as longing, yearning, hunger, desire, etc., but it is far more nuanced and beautiful than what any of those words can capture. The British author C.S. Lewis described it as 'the inconsolable longing in the heart for we know not what.”

Where were we born from?

Where were we born from?
From love.
How would we be lost?
Without love.
What helps us overcome?
Love.
How can one also find love?
Through love.
What doesn't make you cry for a long time?
Love.
What brings us always together?
Love.

Dainty Lily so long you've been

Dainty Lily so long you've been
All my delight and all my singing
You are, alas, my pain as well now but
All my singing you still will be.
