Farewell to arms
Today I have enough strength to stand upToday I have enough strength to look at myself
I no longer need mirrors
Or a suit of armor that hardens my traveling
Today I'm going to enter the world
Today, to walk my own road
Paintings aren't enough anymore
I want to see what's behind them
Farewell to lies which that were believed in
Farewell to speeches which atoned for all the sins
Farewell to arms which are used to protect life
Farewell to arms which are used to destroy life
Like a bird has been created to fly
A human being has been created to joy1
When you're not afraid of yourself
You won't be afraid to live life either
The world is full of secrets
There's an eternity in every moment
There's a human on every street
With unknown words inside them
Farewell to laws which the world was chained to
Farewell to borders which were built too often
Farewell to arms which are used to protect life
Farewell to arms which are used to destroy life
Today I have enough strength to stand up
Today I'll enter the world
To walk my own road
I want to see what's behind all the walls
Today I'll start singing
Today I'll bring a knife to a gunfight2
A knife to a gunfight
Where no one has to get hurt
Farewell to arms which that were believed in
Farewell to arms which atoned for all the sins
Farewell to arms which are used to protect life
Farewell to arms which are used to destroy life
Farewell to arms which are used to protect life
Farewell to arms which are used to destroy life
- 1. [sic]
- 2. This doesn't work that well in English. The Finnish idiom 'Soitellen sotaan', which is used to describe someone 'bringing a knife to a gunfight', literally translates to 'To go to war while playing (music/an instrument)' so in the context of this song it means both being adventurous and venturesome and playing music in a world that just keeps fighting wars. However, outside this song the idiom 'Soitellen sotaan' just means being a suicidal daredevil.
