The ballad of Valentín of the Sierra
I'm going to sing a balladabout a friend from my homeland,
his name was Valentín,
he was executed and hung in the Sierra.
I don't want to recall
that it was on one winter afternoon,
that by a stroke of bad luck Valentin
fell into the hands of the government.
He liked festivals
and horse races,
but he also liked playing
in cockfights in Palenque.
Soldiers captured him
and took him to a room
so that there he would confess
who were the men that were with him.
The colonel said to him:
'Valentín, be very careful,
for you see, I can have you sent off
to a firing squad to be executed'.
Because Valentín was an honorable man,
he gave them no other reason.
'I'm one of those very men
who has tried starting the Revolution.'
Now Valentín with his people
are lost in the mountainside,
long live brave men,
long live Colonel Valentín of the Sierra.
