Brother Killed on a Ship

For a week I searched for my brother, for month my golden-one
I searched in Finland, searched the islands, on the other side of Kaprio

Ee ee estratsa, on the other side of Kaprio
Ee ee estratsa, on the other side of Kaprio

I went to the shore, I saw a ship sailing
I asked the ship-elder: Is my brother here?

Ee ee estratsa, Is my brother here?
Ee ee estratsa, Is my brother here?

So spoke the ship-elder with grey hair
Your brother's not here, your mother's babe's not here

Ee ee estratsa, Your mother's babe's not here
Ee ee estratsa, Your mother's babe's not here

I asked the ship elder: Why is the water red?

Ee ee estratsa, Why is the water red?
Ee ee estratsa, Why is the water red?

The ship-elder answered: The water's red because
We cut open a pike's belly and threw the guts into the sea

Ee ee estratsa, And threw the guts into the sea
Ee ee estratsa, And threw the guts into the sea

In the water my brother sang, my mother's babe in the waves.

Ee ee estratsa, my mother's baby in the waves.
Ee ee estratsa, my mother's baby in the waves.

They didn't cut a pike's belly, they cut your brothers belly
They there the guts into the sea, they carried the liver ashore

Ee ee estratsa, they carried the liver ashore
Ee ee estratsa, they carried the liver ashore

I'll take a message to my mother, I'll tell my mom
That she mustn't drink water from the sea

Ee ee estratsa, drink water from the sea
Ee ee estratsa, drink water from the sea

My mother mustn't drink water from the sea,
For when she drinks from the sea, she drinks her son's blood

Ee ee estratsa, she drinks her son's blood
Ee ee estratsa, she drinks her son's blood

My mother mustn't eat the fish of the sea
For when she eats the fist of the sea, she eats her son's flesh

Ee ee estratsa, she eats her son's flesh
Ee ee estratsa, she eats her son's flesh

Wanting a man

Long have I searched for a beauty
Long have I waited for a beauty

Weeks have gone by
Long have I searched for a beauty
Long have I waited for a beauty

Into that wolf's mouth
Tongue on the weasel's plate
On the bear's palm hands

I repeat, I repeat, young maiden
I repeat, to a man

For these maidens
For these beautiful chicks

Engagement comes screaming
Big money jingling
If only the groom would treat well
Stay in the evenings

Where are you, my blood?
My good swelling flesh

The bride's weeping

Maiden, hear me singing,
The takers are already at your door,
The men are at your gate to take you away.

Do you think, poor girl,
Do you think they will take you for a month
or for a day?

Do you think, poor girl,
that your work is over, that your worries are lessened?
The worries are just beginning,
you will get plenty to think about.

The veil will bring you sorrow,
with the wedding clothes you get too many words,
and sadness with the wedding weaves.

Weep, maiden, when you are getting married,
cry when they take you.
If you don’t weep when you are getting married,
you will weep all your life.

Cry, cry, our girl,
weep with our weeping.

When you were at your father’s home,
your father called you his flower,
your mother called you the sunrise,
your sister called you her precious little bird,
your brother called you his little fish from the water.

When you will go to another home,
your father-in-law will call you a sledge,
your mother-in-law will call you a swollen log,
your brother-in-law will call you a viper,
you sister-in-law will call you an evil woman.

I sing to my sister,
I chirp to my precious dear (“golden-breast”).
Now you will be separated from us,
parted as a cut-off piece of bread,
and they will give you another name
