Thistle, mistletoe, little chest

It's said there once walked
along green ways
judgement striding.

This stone is placed in memory of þræll, Karl, Jarl
He lies concealed,
he who was followed
by the greatest deeds (most men knew that),
Þrudr's warrior of battles,
in this mound

Northern lights

There were fires northward, on the seashore, they
by salty rocks covered in rime.
There were fires northward, on the seashore, they
a light was born in the dark.

In that land, where I know it lies,
there was an island nearby.
In that land, where I know it lies,
the rime giants carry out destiny.

What comes from afar keeps me awake,
every morning, I greet the light of

What’s the path to the sky
What’s the path to the sky
from Earth?

Rainbow, Aurora,
I greet the Northern lights, Baldr’s lights.

You should have seen them, do you call them “rainbow”?
They have three colours, they’re called “northern lights”.
The bridge between heaven and Earth, they’re those they once owned,
above the sea blue as flames, they’re called “northern lights”.

every morning, I greet the light of Baldr.

  • 1. Baldr was a god often associated with the sun, albeit not being the Sun god.
  • 2. The rainbow, which Norse mythology believed to be a bridge between the human world (Midgard) and the world of the gods (Asgard).

The terrible winter

Versions: #1
I remember
when the snow falls from every direction,
a lot of frost and sharp winds.
Such is the winter to come.

Three winters like this will go by,
with no summer in-between.

I remember Fimbulwinter.
Time of winds, time of wolves, the sun darkening,
it will fall everywhere.2
Such is the winter to come.

He has the shape of an eagle,
and when he soars
all the winds rise under his wings.
He has the shape of an eagle,
and when he soars
all the winds rise under his wings.3

Where does the wind come from?
It cannot be seen
Where does the wind come from?
Where does the wind come from?
It cannot be seen
For it is magnificently shaped

She sees surfacing once again
the ever-green earth from the sea,
waterfalls flow, an eagle flies above,
It’s fishing on the mountains.5

  • 1. A three-years long winter which in Norse mythology is prelude to the forthcoming of . It's not clear why the lyrics say 'I remember', as Fimbulwinter is an event yet to happen in Norse mythology.
  • 2. While all previous lines come from stanza 51 of '', and it fact it doesn't connect well with the reast of the lyrics (it literally means 'he is on every way').
  • 3. These and the upcoming lines come from 'Gylfaginning', but from stanza 18, and they tell about Hræsvelgr, the eagle-shaped giant who creates the wind.
  • 4. Kári ('wind') and Logi ('fire') are two of the three sons of the giant , who represent the three forces who shape the world. I was unable to find the origin of this line.
  • 5. From stanza 59 of ''. The 'she' at the beginning is the seeress who tells the Völuspá. The stanza describes the new, post-apocalyptic world which will follow Ragnarök.

You

You were a distant light at the end of the road,
the hope that a wise man’s glass would seek in vain.
You were a heartbeat and racing thoughts.
I wish you’d finally come in an ardent prayer.

You were a leaf dancing in the purple of the autumn,
you were a door opened impatiently in the hallway
and the moment when time stopped and space disappeared.
For a single moment you were, you were all this, and [now] you are...

You are a cheerful flame that burns high,
the hope that a wise man’s eye seeks in vain,
time measured by an impatient beating of the heart.
I wish you’d stay here like an ardent whisper.

You are my music sleeping in seven strings
and a handful of snow where I hide my flushed face,
and a thread which weaves in gold the yarn of thoughts.
You’re all this to me, you are all this, and [then] you will be...

You will be a spring wind that blows from the river,
you will be the sleep that closes the tired eyelids,
my serene dawn, the beauty of grey days,
you’ll be a grain of salt, bread and water.

You’ll be an ungraceful poem and a cricket in the chimney,
Indian Summer in autumn and a carol in winter,
because this is how it’s meant to be: where I will be, you will be too.
You were, you are and you will be...

Skaldic Haka

(?I'm assuming this is an exclamation)
(old man)
(Alas!)
(cry for them)
(man or woman)
The household wanes
threw a death wave over those
The oarlocks wore out for,
with the tired mast-top
with the tired mast-top
The godly-fish from
Firnøy’s streams in the drift of
the land of shining meadows
the land of shining meadows
Who?
Who brought the horde to the land afar?

Oh, Valhalla

Oh, Valhalla, oh, Valhalla
Oh, Valhalla, oh, Valhalla
The hall, I know, stands
Nicer than the Sun, better than gold
Faithful men will settle there
And live in bliss for eternity
Oh, Valhalla, oh, Valhalla
Oh, Valhalla, oh, Valhalla

Five hundred doors
And forty more
Are in Valhalla, I believe
Eight hundred great warriors
Go through one door at once
When they go into battle with the Wolf

The hall, I know, stands
Nicer than the Sun, better than gold
Faithful men will settle there
And live in bliss for eternity
Oh, Valhalla, oh, Valhalla
Oh, Valhalla, oh, Valhalla
Oh, Valhalla, oh, Valhalla
Oh, Valhalla, oh, Valhalla

All glorious warriors
Are fighting every day
In the yard of Odin
They choose the slain
And finish the battle
Then sit together at peace

The hall, I know, stands
Nicer than the Sun, better than gold
Faithful men will settle there
And live in bliss for eternity
Oh, Valhalla, oh, Valhalla
Oh, Valhalla, oh, Valhalla
