Once again we've been drinking since morning
But what's there to do at the dacha, in this heat?
Minutes flow like years
And vodka with ice is drunk like water
And of course we could go swimming in the stream
But it's a long way to go, and besides, it's full of junk
And I've got a tenner, and Vera has three rubles
And Venechka, having gotten dressed, went to the deli
 
Once again we drank the whole day
Sitting on the veranda, hidden in shadows
I pour pepsi-cola into rum
And nobody cares what'll happen later
And we listen to David Bowie for the five-hundredth time
Though everyone's long since gotten tired of David Bowie
And we play Durak1, and we goof around
After all it's summer today and we have no other business
 
And now it's already evening, and we keep on drinking
Venechka lay down, Vera and I drink together
It's strange, but we don't feel like sleeping
We took a bottle with us and went for a stroll

Having left a final bite on my shoulder

• 1. This line in the original is a title of Viktor Tsoi's song, hence the alternative title for this one is A Song For Tsoi.
• 2. Soviet Rock-n-Roll sub-culture included the use of some English nouns in common speech. 'Session' was an unofficial concert or a jamming session. 'Flat' was used for an aparment, 'shoes' for footwear, 'Mike' for Mikhail and so on. Interestingly enough, these nouns were used according to the rules of Russian language and would acquire different endings depending on the clause.
• 3. The Palace of Culture - usually the only place in the Soviet era towns where any unofficial concerts were allowed. Very often these Palaces were named after Communists or Party-related events.
• 4. This line in the original is a catch phrase from the classic Russian play Woe from Wit by Alexander Griboyedov.
• 5. A traditional Russian non-alcoholic drink, to me its taste is a mix of kombucha with lager. In Soviet era it was sold in every town from the bright yellow 900 liter canisters, mounted on two-wheel trailers
